FAA Investigating Grant County Helicopter Crash | News
The FAA is investigating after a helicopter crashed into a cherry orchard Monday morning in West Central Grant County.
Rotor wash, the downward wind force created by helicopter rotors, is often to used to blow water off cherries in an effort to keep them from splitting following heavy rainfall. Christoper Lezzoni, 31, was flying a Bell Jet Ranger helicopter above an orchard when it became tangled in bird control netting and crashed.
“I'm relieved the pilot was not seriously injured,” said Grant County Sheriff Tom Jones. “This incident certainly could have had a much worse outcome, and I wish the pilot a quick recovery.”
Lezzoni was taken to Quincy Valley Medical Center with back injuries and was having difficulty breathing, but the injuries are not life threatening. The helicopter, however, suffered extensive damage and the FAA is investigating the crash.
